What are the ATPL Exams?

The SARON and SAMRA are the Transport Canada written examinations that serve as the prerequisite knowledge tests for obtaining an Airline Transport Pilot Licence.

What is the maximum flight time for a flight crew member conducting a single-pilot operation in any 24 consecutive hours?

C. 8 hours in any 24 consecutive hours.

Instructor Explanation

According to CAR 700.27(1)(d), an air operator shall not assign flight time to a flight crew member if their total flight time will exceed 8 hours in any 24 consecutive hours in the case of a single-pilot operation. This is a crucial SARON memory item regarding fatigue management.

METEOROLOGY (SAMRA)

In a polar front jet stream, where is the region of most severe Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) typically located?

A. Below and to the polar side of the jet core.

Instructor Explanation

CAT is most frequently encountered in the vicinity of the tropopause and the jet stream. The most intense CAT is usually found on the polar side of the jet core (the cold air side) and slightly below the core itself, due to the tight temperature and pressure gradients creating high wind shear.

NAVIGATION (SAMRA)

At what point during a long-range high altitude flight should a pilot expect the Mach tuck phenomenon if accelerating past M_crit?

B. When the center of pressure moves aft, causing a strong nose-down pitching moment.

Instructor Explanation

As an aircraft accelerates past its Critical Mach number (M_crit), supersonic flow develops over the wing, causing a shock wave. This boundary layer separation pushes the wing's center of pressure rearward. This aft shift in lift causes a nose-down pitching moment known as Mach tuck.
